UPDATE 13 AUGUST 2000.

Project 4WD Links TJ is no more. While trying to pass slower moving traffic a car turned in front of me and the resulting accident totaled the Jeep. I can say now that the roll bars work well having rolled a TJ 1 3/4 times at about 45 MPH with the top down. I have found a replacement TJ, look for it to appear on this page soon. Oh, no one was hurt in the destruction of the Project 4WD Links TJ, other than my hurt pride.

Project 4WD TJ

Welcome, in doing any project you have to start somewhere and have a good plan on what you are looking to accomplish. For Project 4WD TJ we are looking to increase the off road ability of Project 4WD TJ, preserve the ability to be used as a daily driver, not cost a small fortune and still be drivable on the street. What does this mean? Well It' can't be down during the week when needed as daily transportation.  So all projects will have to be done over the weekend or at night when time permits. All modifications will be geared toward the home mechanic, to keep cost down and show what is on the market for the home mechanic.  Follow along as I work toward this goal.

Current Modifications:

  • OME lift  - After the Austrian Jeep Jamboree I realized the need for a lift. I searched the web and decided the ARB/OME system fit my needs. UPDATE 30 May 2000 After bashing the stock gas tank skid plate I have decided to increase my ground clearance by adding spring spacers on top of the OME coils.

  • Recovery - A Milemarker winch is on and works like a champ!

  • Olympic Front and Rear Rock Bumpers - with build in 2 inch receivers front and rear. The Olympic bumpers are rock hard and provide the look and protection I was looking for.

  • Olympic Pack Rack - Needed more storage room, two adults and two large children take up almost all the inside of a TJ. When I travel I needed someplace to put the extra gear, so a rear mounted rack was in order.

  • Olympic Roof Rack - As things go this was not a required item, until my teen aged son decide to take up wind surfing. The rack is great for carting around a wind surfer and all the related gear.

  • Tires - Installed 31" BFGoodrich All Terrain's on a used set of AR-292 rims for the street and 31" Kelly Safari DTR mud tires on the stock steel rims for off road only driving.

  • Bumpstop Spacers - The new tires would rub on the lower control arms at full lock. A few thick spacers under the bumpstops fixed this and didn't reduce the turning radius.

  • Trailhead Deflators - Oasis Off Road Mfg. makes these handy little items, best way I know of airing down your tires prior to a trail ride.

  • Homemade Disconnects - I did this on my XJ and found it was easy to do the same for my TJ. UPDATE 30 May 2000 One year later and the homemade disconnects are starting to wear out, time to replace the pins, clips and wing nuts. Also considering the TeraFlex disconnects, stay tuned.

  • Skid Plates - Protection for the vital parts of Project 4WD Links TJ. My gas tank skid plate doesn't, protect that is. It has to go, I'm looking at what the market has to offer. UPDATE 4 June 2000 RTZ Off Road has provided me with a proto type gas tank skid plate. Look for the write up soon.

  • Body Lift - A one inch body lift and one inch motor spacer is on order.

  • Safety Items - Fire extinguisher, a good first aid kit, and a warning triangle.

  • Locking Trunk - Needed a secure place to put my CD changer and tools. A soft top provides no security and I normally leave the top off anyway.

  • Hood Lock - After my buddy has his battery stolen I decided to secure my hood, cheap protection that was easy to install.

  • 10 Disk CD Changer - Mounted it in the locking trunk, works great with the factory stereo. I'm thinking of replacing the factory speakers in the sounds bar.

  • Rocker Protection - Looking at the options, I am thinking of "Off Your Rocker" Rocker Panel and Corners or going ahead and making some myself. I welcome your comments or suggestions.
